1. Capital and industrial city of South
Australia; population (1986) 993,100.
Industries include oil refining,
shipbuilding, and the manufacture of
electrical goods and cars. Grain, wool,
fruit, and wine are exported. Founded in
1836, Adelaide was named after William IV's
queen. It is a fine example of town
planning, with residential districts
separated from the commercial area by the
river Torrens, dammed to form a lake.
Impressive streets include King William
Street and North Terrace, and fine buildings
include Parliament House, Government House,
the Anglican cathedral of St Peter, the Roman
Catholic cathedral, two universities, the
State observatory, and the museum and art
gallery.
2. Queen consort of William IV of England.
Daughter of the Duke of Saxe-Meiningen, she
married William, then Duke of Clarence, in
1818. No children of the marriage survived
infancy.
